Until 1944 the genus Metasequoia was only known from fossil evidence. As with the other redwood species, the dawn redwood once realized quite a wide distribution. It could be found throughout the northern regions of Asia and North America. Metasequoia glyptostroboides, otherwise known as the Dawn Redwood, is a fast-growing, endangered and coniferous tree - the sole living relic species of the genus Metasequoia, one of three species in the subfamily Sequoioideae. It is native to Lichuan County in the Hubei province of China.

The Dawn redwood Tree, Metasequoia glyptostroboides Species, is the only extant (not extinct) species left in the genus Metasequoia. This tree is a deciduous coniferous species, and is classed as a softwood.

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Species is one of three tree species known as Redwood, see the Coast Redwood or California Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), and the Giant Sequoia or Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum).

Growing Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides):
Hardiness:

The Dawn Redwood tree can be grown in USDA Zones 9 to 5, making it hardy down to lows of -25°F (-32°C).
In great Britain Metasequoia glyptostroboides has a H7 hardiness rating (Very Hardy, will grow in -20°C to -32°C).

Location:

Since its re-discovery in 1947, it has been observed that the Dawn Redwood tree will thrive in standing water, such as in boggy waterlogged areas or places with poor drainage. In cultivation; until the tree is fully established, it is prone to drought and intolerant of any kind of dry soil conditions. Therefore adequate watering must be maintained in areas where the soils are not naturally saturated with water, such as irrigation. Planting the tree along the side of a pond or stream is recommended in dry arid areas such as the American Mid-west.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides will grow in many soil types from moist but well drained, to waterlogged clay, including Chalk, Clay, Loam and Sand. The tree will grow in soils that are Acidic, Neutral, or Alkaline.

Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
coniferous deciduous leaves turning brown in Autumn,
before completely falling off.

Characteristics, Habit:

Coniferous tree, forming a Columnar and or Upright shape. Deciduous, see pictures or photos to the right and below.

Size:

Time to ultimate height; 20 to 60 years. The Dawn Redwood is a fast growing tree.
Planted Cultivated trees have reached 25 to 40m (82 - 131 ft.) in height and 1 to 1.3m (3 - 4 ft.) in trunk diameter quickly within 56 years.

Colour (Color in American English):

The Dawn Redwood is a typical mid green colour in Spring and Summer.
Because this tree is deciduous, the leaves change colour in Autumn to brown, then to pink or yellow before falling off.
The bark is reddish brown.

Propagation:

Propagate by seed, semi-hardwood or hardwood cuttings.

Care:
